Project 5 — Canadian health trends and the media (Grades 7-9, 10-11)

Although the proportion of people who are active in their leisure time has grown, the proportion who are obese has also increased, according to new results from the Canadian Community Health Survey by Statistics Canada. In the past six years, the number of obese Canadians aged 20 to 65 grew more than 500,000, to almost 2.8 million.
Despite this trend, the people we see in advertising and entertainment are skinnier and more buff than ever. Why do you think there is such a difference between what's on our TV screens and in magazines and what's real? Do you think changes to the way we eat, exercise, and use our spare time has affected the size of our nation's waistlines? Are we ignoring the advice given to us by doctors and health organizations?
