Project 2 — Learn about sports medicine (Grades 4-6, 7-9)

|

|
It's easier than you think to get your heart beating a little faster — and we're not talking about that cute boy or girl in your French class. Just getting out of bed and ready for your day kick-starts your whole circulation system.
Try taking your pulse rate in the morning, before you get out of bed. You can find your pulse on the left side of your neck, just below your jaw, or on the inside of your wrist towards your thumb.
• Touch the area lightly until you feel your pulse/heartbeat.
• Count the beats for 15 seconds, and write the number down.
• Then multiply the number by 4 to calculate the number of heartbeats per minute.
• Once you've showered, dressed, and had a bit to eat, check it again.
How much faster was your heart beating? Why does your heart speed up or slow down? What effects does this have on your body? The next time you exercise, take your pulse again, and you'll be amazed to see how much faster it can beat.
