Project 5 — What does your community have to say about diets? (Grades 4-6, 7-9)

Journalists often do a special kind of investigation called "vox pops," where they go into the community and ask people what they know about a certain topic. If you've ever wanted to play the role of an investigative reporter, now's your chance!
Get hold of a video camera, audio recorder, or pen and paper, and record the responses of your family, friends, neighbours, and community members to these questions:
• What is the difference between saturated fat, polyunsaturated fat, and monosaturated fat?
• What foods are these fats found in?
• Is there such a thing as good fat? Why or why not?
Once you have ten people's responses to these questions recorded, it's time to add your own commentary. Do you think your community knows enough about the different types of fat? Are people wrongly informed about the role of fat in their diet?
• What kinds of diets have they been on?
• Why did they want to diet? Was it for health reasons or for appearances only?
• What diet did they use?
• How did they choose it?
• How did it work?
• Would they try it again?
• Why do women diet more than men?
Once you have interviewed at least ten people, add your own commentary. Do you think your community knows the difference between healthy and unhealthy diets? What was the most popular type of diet among your interviewees? Do people have unrealistic ideas about dieting? Does our society have certain ideas about dieting and body-image?
