Project 3 — The truth about fats (Grades 7-9)

What do you think of when you hear the word "fat"? Do you automatically think of something negative? For many years we've been told to look for low-fat options in foods and avoid eating too much fat. But recently, several books about fat have been published, and they carry quite a different message. These books say that we actually need to eat fat and that some kinds of fat are actually good for us. See if you can find a copy of these books in your local library: The Fat Wars and New Look at Dieting: Fat Can be a Friend.
What have you heard about fat? Can you name the different types of fat and how your body deals with them differently? How much fat do you need in your diet? Think about your own eating habits. Are you eating enough of the right kinds of fats or too much of the wrong kinds of fats? How can you change your diet to help you get more of the "good fats" and less of the "bad fats"? Write an editorial giving people the scoop on healthy versus unhealthy fats.
