Project 2 — Nutrition for athletes (Grades 7-9)

Most world-class athletes rely on the help of nutritionists, who can design balanced eating plans for top-notch physical performances. When sports competitors don't get the right nutrition, they can suffer serious consequences. Have you ever seen marathon runners collapse because of dehydration? Or have you ever felt dizzy and sick after taking part in a sport?
Design an eating plan for a world-class athlete competing in an athletic event. Choose between an endurance athlete like a cross-country skier, who would need a constant supply of energy, or a shorter-event athlete like a luge competitor, who would need a short burst of strength and energy at the crucial moment of pushing off.
Remember, athletes who train in competitive sports and endurance events need a lot of extra energy and fluid in their diets. Understanding the role that fluids, carbohydrates, fats, and proteins play in the body can help athletes reach their full potential.
