Warming Up — Discuss performance-enhancing drugs

From Ben Johnson's positive steroid test in 1988, to finding marijuana in Ross Rebagliati's system in 1998, the Olympics and other sporting events have been dogged by drug controversies. It's an ugly side of sports, but unfortunately, it is also very real. Find a couple of news or magazine articles about the abuse of performance-enhancing drugs in sport, and share them with a group. What are some of the common performance-enhancing drugs? How do they work? What are their side effects? How are they detected? Do you have differing opinions about the use of these substances? Do you think nicotine or alcohol could also be classed as performance enhancers? You might be surprised to learn that caffeine is on the list of banned substances for Olympic athletes.

These websites might help you find information about legal and illegal substances:

• BBC — Drugs in Sports
• ASDA — Drugs in Sports
• HowStuffWorks — How Performance-Enhancing Drugs Work
• HowStuffWorks — How Nicotine Works
