Project 6 — Design drug policy for the International Olympic Committee

The IOC drug committee plays an important role in designing, testing, and implementing drug policies for Olympic athletes. Without this committee, athletes in the Olympic Games would be unfairly matched, and probably quite unhealthy. In a group, imagine that you are members of the IOC drug committee, and decide on how you would approach the issue of drugs in the Olympic Games. What drug policies would you implement? What drugs or supplements would you ban Olympic athletes from using? What would be your policy regarding alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, or prescription drugs? How would you test for drugs? Would you ban certain foods as well? What sort of penalties would you put in place for those who use a banned substance? How would you penalize an athlete who claims they took performance-enhancing drugs unknowingly? Would you have different rules for different types of athletes?

You may want to check out the website for the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport and the IOC anti-doping code.

Present your set of drug rules to the class in the form of an official document, and discuss whether they are fair or not.
