Project 1 — The question of unintentional use of drugs in sport (Grades 7-9, 10-11)

Sometimes an athlete will test positive for a performance-enhancing substance, and deny that they knowingly took it. They might say it was an ingredient in a nutritional supplement they were taking, or that it was produced naturally in their body.
That was the case for Commonwealth triathlon athlete Kelly Guest. In 2002, he tested positive for the performance-enhancing drug nandrolone, but he insisted that he had not deliberately taken the drug.
Check out these websites about his drug infraction. When you've gathered enough information, divide your class into two teams, and stage a debate over whether Kelly should be subject to a full penalty, or whether he was the victim of an unfortunate mistake.
