Project 4 — Making profit in Sport (Grades 4-6, 7-9)

The world of sports is more than just entertainment-it's also big business. Think about all the ways in which an athlete or sports team generates money. A big chunk of their income probably comes from sponsorship deals and merchandise sales. Can you think of ways that the sporting industry publicizes itself? How does it make sure that it's supported financially? Are there certain sports that make more money than others? Why do you think they do?
Choose an Olympic athlete (check out Athletes CAN Sport Links if you need a hand), and make a list of all the non-sport related ways in which they could earn money. Could they model clothes? Endorse certain products? Act? Explain what activities would best suit your athlete, and why.
