Project 1 — Parents as coaches (Grades 4-6)

|

|
Sometimes parents of athletes also act as their children's coach, even when their children become adults. Tennis champs Venus and Serena Williams are still coached by their father, for example, and golf sensation Tiger Woods was coached for years by his father, Earl. Ask yourself what the role of a coach is, and compare it to the role of a parent. What are the similarities? What are the differences? Think of the pros and cons of such a situation, and then have a debate about the benefits of having a parent as a coach. After the debate, have a class vote on which side made the best arguments. How would you feel if your parent was your coach? You could also write up an editorial stating your opinion on this issue.
