Project 5 — Is the prevalence of sports in our society a good thing? (Grades 10-11)

Not everyone thinks sports play a positive role in our society. Critical thinker Noam Chomsky, for example, has said some very negative things about the prevalence of sports in our culture. He even went so far as to describe sports as "the opiate of the masses." He also declared:
"Sports plays a societal role in engendering jingoist and chauvinist attitudes. They're designed to organize a community to be committed to their gladiators."
What do you think he means by this? Do you agree with his comment?
With your class or in groups, stage a debate agreeing or disagreeing with the following statement:
The fact that sports are so prevalent and such big business is a positive thing for our society.
Consider what role sports play in national or community pride, their role as entertainment, and the attitudes or behaviours they encourage. Do you think professional sports are becoming too expensive for the middle class? Do you think professional athletes deserve to earn such large sums of money, compared to other people in the community?
