Project 4 — Do young athletes sacrifice too much for sport? (Grades 7-9, 10-11)

Kids are often pushed into competitive sports at a very young age. These young athletes are forced to make a lot of sacrifices in their education, social lives, and family relationships. Are the sacrifices worth it, particularly in non-professional sports where athletes struggle financially? Do these athletes have enough control over their own lives? Take a look at the selection process of professional sports like basketball and hockey. What kinds of physical damage do athletes suffer for their sport? Think about all the pressures placed on these young athletes — from their parents, schools, sports organizations, and countries. To get an idea of the expectations placed on young athletes you could watch a documentary like Hoop Dreams, which is about two young professional basketball hopefuls. When you've got all your information ready, debate the following statement:
The challenges and pressure faced by young athletes are a necessary part of their training.
